The 2011 Charity Trust PA Roaring 20’s Ball was another marvellous evening for all our friends and guests at the Splendid Cardiff City Hall. The weather was kind and the festive atmosphere was initiated as people arrived by the Cardiff Christmas Wonderland right outside the front door, with skaters and skyride carousel all adorned with bright coloured lighting and music. Also outside the front door was parked a 1920’s vintage Rolls Royce to set off the trend for the evening and kindly supplied/chauffeured by the owner Mr Nigel Taylor - Rumney Wedding Cars. Once inside, guests were guided to the Drinks Reception in the classic Marble Hall, where the well stocked Raffle Table and Silent Auction Tables were laid out ready for everyone to view and start their bidding.
The raffle prizes table included a variety of items comprising; meals, 3 x hampers (Fruit, goodies and Chocolate) even a Panasonic TV. The Silent Auction also had well sought after items, including a 2011 signed & framed Welsh National Rugby Team Shirt, three signed & framed mountaineering prints from Sir Christian Bonington CBE, a Twickenham History Book signed by BBC TV’s John Inverdale and Martin Jonson CBE and many other valuable prizes.
The evening continued when everyone moved to locate their 1920's Celebrity themed/named tables and places in the very ornate Assembly Rooms. To establish the right ambiance the room was decorated using 3metre high art deco relief posters depicting in cartoon style various 1920’s iconic images. The stage had a star backcloth with a large Roaring 20’s poster sign located above the stage/band which was outlined by red curtaining and backlit using up-lighters. The many room alcoves were kindly decorated by Alison Bentley using parlour palms, these were also attractively silhouette backlit using red up lighters. The guest tables were set out in rows, which looked marvellous with their metre high, five arm candelabras, with red candles to achieve the right look setting off the look with both red and black serviettes etc.
The evening continued with the introduction of our Host; writer and BBC Radio Broadcaster Myfanwy Alexander. Next came a brief update by Trustee Stephen Blundell on “why we are here”. Steve then asked Trustee Dr Jo Longstaffe to present the Trust PA Charity big donation cheque for £30,000 (the money raised over the last 12 months) to Dr Mark Bacon from Spinal Research to continue the important work to eventual SCI repair. Dr Bacon responded giving a brief update on the progressive and exciting recent scientific work underway complimented by a positive view to the future with repair on the horizon. Next the IGP skydive team of seven brave souls were on stage to present a very welcome cheque for the marvellous figure of £1,687 to Trustee Stephen Blundell to continue our important work.
We continued with dinner and a starter course including; Cod & Pancetta Fishcake served with Dressed Rocket salad & Red Onion Marmalade which was very nice. The main course was Supreme of Chicken stuffed Welsh Leeks and Caerphilly Cheese served with Mushrooms & White Wine Sauce, very well presented, hot and scrumptious. We were entertained by Hayley’s Thoroughly Modern Millies who danced to our guests delight and applause. Our dessert was a very delicious and naughty Lemon Tart served with Strawberry & Black Pepper Ice Cream with Creme Anglaise. Sounds a bit strange but the result was mouth wateringly good. Coffee and Welsh chocolates were to round the dinner off to perfection.
After the raffle, our live band The Crow Valley Rhythmakers were on stage recreating the atmosphere of the renowned Cotton Club of the early 1920’s nightlife. Their singer Giaccolina complimented the entertainment admirably by singing a number of well known early classics. She has a lovely melodious voice with great stage presence so we wish her every success and luck in her future career. Many guests danced and enjoyed the atmosphere into the night moving to the excelent sounds of a great band led by the well known
trumpeter and leader Ceri Williams.
We were very pleased to thank all our supporters’ friends, helpers and fund raisers though our big screen “Thank you Presentation” which was featured during the evening, early cartoons also added to the feel of the evening. We were thrilled to see that most of our guests had made the effort looking resplendant by arriving in early 1920’s character/dress.
Our thanks to everyone who helped, donated, contributed and attended this
special 10year (after P-A's accident) Charity Trust PA celebration party.
